Custom Window Treatments
As any decorator or designer knows, windows can be one of the most important elements in any room. Windows not only act as a bridge between the inside and outside worlds, but also control natural light flowing into a room and help shape a person's perception of space and distance. Since bare, unadorned, windows rarely look right, and the style of window dressing can vastly alter the look of a room, you'll want to choose carefully when shopping for window treatments.
Window Dresser and Master Upholsterer Ching Young has been creating custom window treatments and made to order couches for Chicago's finest homes for more than twenty years. Here he gives a basic guide to window treatments:
- Soften a room or space.
One important function of a window treatment is to soften an architectural element and create a warmer feeling within an interior space.
- Work with the architecture.
According to Young, a good window treatment always plays off of the room's existing architectural elements. It's very important that the space is well balanced, and a window is in one area where you have the flexibility to create that balance.
- Find inspiration in magazines.
It's important to know your likes and dislikes before you start choosing treatments. Try looking through home decoration magazines and circle things that catch your eye.
- Hard options.
Hard window treatments include wood blinds, wood slat blinds, and mini blinds.
- Soft options.
Among the softer options, which are more in keeping with the bedroom or a bathroom, are soft drapery treatments, Roman shades, and balloon shades,. Remember to consider the linings of the draperies; in Young's experience, silks tend to fade tremendously.
- $800 and up per window.
According to Young, a really good window treatment can cost between $800 and $1,500 per window.
