Martial Arts can help kids develop focus and self-confidence.

Martial Arts Benefits for Kids

It's no secret that martial arts programs can help children develop strength and agility, but disciplines from karate to tae kwon do can also have many non-physical benefits. The Martial arts are about developing the mind and the spirit as much as the body, and can help kids master important lessons and skills that they will use in other areas of their lives.

Larry Tatum began his study of Kenpo Karate in Pasadena, California in 1966, and has risen to become one of the style's most prominent figures. He has created 23 instructional videos, written two books, and specializes in teaching children at his kenpo karate schools. Mr. Tatum is the official spokesperson and co-founder for "Children at Risk", a non-profit organization, and works as a technical consultant and fight choreographer for television shows and films. Here he explains how the study and practice of martial arts can benefit kids:

  • Consider the benefits.
If you're thinking about taking your child to a martial arts school, says Tatum, you should think in terms of what that martial art training is going to do for your child.
  • Kids can learn respect.
When children come into martial art schools, one of the first things they learn is how to respect each other. They are the focus of attention, and they realize that their teacher is there for them. This leads the children, in turn, to respect their teachers and fellow students.
  • Kids develop more than their bodies.
Rituals and formalities in martial arts schools are very important because they re-instill ethical behavior. More important than physical skills, martial arts teach children mental skills. Qualities that emerge through martial arts training include focus, discipline, perseverance, self-confidence and self-respect.
  • Skills and lessons can apply to school and life.
With a good teacher in charge of the class, learning becomes a fun challenge, rather than something the kids are forced to do. In Tatum's experience, this can carry over to a child's schoolwork. After a few weeks or a month of studying a martial art, kids can have a whole new attitude towards school assignments.
