Create a color scheme by taking cues from existing patterns in a room. Try letting a pillow or upholstery design guide your direction.

Bring Color to Your Home

Move beyond neutral and make use of color to transform the appearance of your home.

  • Take color cues from existing patterns.
One way to come up with a color scheme is to take cues from existing patterns. Let upholstery, pillows, or a painting suggest different directions for flooring or wall color.

  • Add color to small areas.
Try adding just a pinch of bold or contrasting color to a room by painting only one welcoming statement.

  • Change spatial perceptions with color.
Color can be an effective way to play with perspective as well. Make a small room appear more spacious by painting the walls a cool color, such as blue or green – or, use a warm color like yellow to make it more intimate.

  • Design with floor color in mind.
Floors can also change the feel of a room. Choosing a medium-tone that’s a bit darker than the walls and ceiling will tend to ground the room and make it feel cozy. A bolder color choice can make the upholstery stand out for a more dramatic environment.
