Playing host on Thanksgiving often means keeping a large group of family and friends happy, while juggling lots of food preparation. One way to share the work and the fun is by throwing a potluck dinner for Thanksgiving. It's a great way to get your guests involved in the celebration while relieving some of your stress as the host. Here's some advice from a party expert to guarantee a fun and stress free holiday.

Marley Majcher is the CEO of The Party Goddess!, a full service catering and event planning company in Southern California which organizes all aspects of large scale functions including flowers, rentals, staff and music.

  • Provide the Foundation. When you have people over for a potluck Thanksgiving dinner you should prepare the turkey and provide the basic fixings and dishes that go with it, so your guests can concentrate on bringing appetizers, side dishes and desserts.
  • Encourage Family Recipes. Get your guests involved by asking them to contribute dishes that have some meaning to them personally. It's a great way to share traditions.
  • Specify Portion Size. Be really specific about what quantity of food you expect your guests to bring. Let them know how many people to expect to feed with their dish.
  • Consider Seating Arrangement. When you're doing your seating plan, try combining talkative people with not so talkative people. Take into consideration people's personalities and interests and how this will initiate some great conversation at the table.
