Napa Valley

Rolling hills, lush vineyards, gastronomical gems. What's not to love about Napa Valley? Here's how to make the most of your time in this country of wine!

The Silverado Trail

Although the wineries with the biggest names are located along Highway 29 (the main road that runs through Napa Valley), it also has the most traffic. For a scenic, and less crowded drive, take a detour and hit the Silverado Trail. More than 35 wineries welcome visitors year-round (call ahead — some are by appointment only). Before you go, visit our link for a printable Silverado map.

Take the Wine Train

Here’s a fun adventure! Hop on a wine train and take a picturesque three hour ride from the city of Napa to St. Helena’s and back. The Wine Tasting Lounge in the 1915 vintage Pullman carriage offers over 30 Napa Valley varietals. The price is just $5 for four samples. Or, take the kids and ride on the Silverado Railcar where you’ll enjoy "open-air" a la carte dining by the slide-open windows.

The French Laundry

Foodies, listen up! Plan ahead and make reservations at one of Napa Valley’s top restaurants, The French Laundry. They serve dinner seven days a week, and lunch only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Two menus are offered that change on a daily basis: a nine course Chef’s Tasting Menu and a nine course Vegetarian Tasting Menu. Reservations are needed, and are accepted two months in advance.

Go Ride a Bike

To fully experience the incredible sights and smells of Napa Valley, head out on a biking adventure. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a recreational rider, a vacation can be customized to fit your needs (i.e. romantic, on-a-budget, sky’s-the-limit). The rainy season usually occurs between December and February, so plan your trip when you know the weather will be on your side! We’ll get you on the road.

Mustard Season

From February 2nd through March 29, 2008, Napa Valley’s Mustard Festival is in full bloom. It’s a great time of year to visit (second only to the summer!) as the wild mustard blossoms carpet the vineyards in vibrant colors of green and gold. This season offers a variety of wine, food, art, entertainment and cultural events throughout the region. Visit our link for a calendar of events.

A Balloon Ride

Experience Napa from a different vantage point — on a hot air balloon ride! Beginning at sunrise, most flights last about an hour, and finish with a complimentary champagne toast. The balloons usually only carry four to six people, so be sure to make reservations in advance.

Run the Marathon

If you’re a runner, take part in the 30th Annual Napa Valley Marathon on March 2, 2008. Known as the "biggest little marathon in the West," it boasts one of the most beautiful courses in the world. Most of the 26.2-mile run is rural, so athletes get to experience panoramic views of valleys, vineyards, fruit trees and flowers. Visit our link to register.

Grocery Shopping

When in Oakville, stop by the Oakville Grocery. Built in 1881, this "little country store" (and National Landmark) carries fine gourmet goods, such as specialty cheeses, local produce, rustic breads and locally roasted espresso drinks (enjoy it on the bench out in front). They also offer boutique wines and custom-made picnic baskets. It’s open from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM daily.

Celestial Film Nights

Does sipping wine under the stars while watching a movie sound like a perfect evening? Then head to Napa Valley in July and take part in their 22nd Wine Country Film Festival, July 16 through July 28, 2008. No outside food or drink is allowed, but their cafe serves seasonal cuisine and wine by the glass. And remember, the nights are cool so bring a jacket!

Wine Tours

Going wine tasting? Master sommelier Andrea Immer has found some of the top wine tours of Napa Valley. Head to the Neibaum-Coppola Estate where you’ll explore the century-old vineyards, or visit the wine-aging caves on the Historic District Tour at the Beringer Winery. Also, most wineries don’t serve food, but they do have a picnic area, so pack a lunch! We’ll get you going.
