Sand sculptures

Kevin Crawford was working for a Los Angeles architectural firm for four years when he realized he was becoming more of a bureaucrat and less of an architect. At the firm, budgets and corporate decisions were hampering his creativity. While working as an architect, Crawford read an article featuring a large sand sculpture and he pinned the story up in his office. He would stare at it and think, "Wouldn't that be great?" One day he called the man featured in the article and was invited to come and make a sculpture with him. Not expecting to make much money at it, Crawford listened to his heart instead of his brain, and decided to give up architecture and jump into sand sculpting. In 1992, Crawford and a couple of his new co-workers started a sand sculpting company of their own called Sandscapes.

Sand Sculptor Facts:

  • Beginning sand sculptors make $50 a day.
  • There are less than five other sand sculpting companies in the U.S.
  • Crawford has won nine world titles in sand sculpting competitions.
  • Attractions like these cost between $50,000 to $100,000.
  • Indoor sandcastles can remain intact for over a year.
  • The large attractions take three to four weeks to create.
