Posting a floor plan in your new house will let your movers know exactly where to place each piece of furniture.

Preparing to move your family and belongings into a new house can be very stressful, and as the big date approaches the pressure can build, ultimately making the move itself a frustrating experience for all involved. A detailed plan of action and a list of helpful hints can be godsends in such times, and can ensure that any little complications in the moving process don't turn into major problems.

Californian Christine Sorgi has been a certified moving consultant for 20 years. Here she offers her expert advice for making your moving day a smooth and trouble free one:

  • Pocket file.
According to Sorgi, moving day is never going to be a walk in the park, but there are many ways to help make it as hassle free as it can be. One helpful strategy is to keep a "move information" pocket folder, and place all your important paperwork and information inside it. If you need to know the phone number of your moving company or the zip code of your new house, they will all be in one convenient place.

  • Cost estimates.
Paying more than you expected to can lead to anger and frustration, so make sure you get written estimates from any professional you deal with concerning your move.

  • Tips.
According to Sorgi, you should tip the furniture movers at the place of origin. This can often lead the truck driver to work a little harder, knowing that he will likely be tipped as well.

  • Floor plan.
Another good idea is to make a furniture floor plan of your new home and tape it up in the entryway. This way, the movers will know exactly where in your new rooms each piece of furniture goes, and will not have to keep asking the question of you.

  • Relax.
And finally, Sorgi recommends trying to relax and keep a positive attitude. After all, you're starting a new chapter in your new life, and you want to get off on the right foot.
