Considering Moving Insurance
Whether it's across town or across the country, moving into a new home requires lots of preparation, from wrapping belongings and packing boxes to arranging for moving men and a truck. One step in the process that many people skip or overlook is purchasing insurance for the move, and according to at least one expert in the business, this can be a mistake. Moving insurance can save the day in many situations when things go wrong, and it is well worth considering.
Californian Christine Sorgi has been a certified moving consultant for 20 years. Here she explains moving insurance and offers some reasons why it's worth taking a closer look at it before your next move:
- No automatic coverage.
In Sorgi's experience, many people who shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars to a moving company assume that their belongings are automatically covered. In reality, this is usually not the case.
- Limited liability.
According to Sorgi, American moving companies have a very low liability limit for damage, making them responsible for only sixty cents per pound per article. This means that if your hundred-pound television falls and breaks, you'll get $60 for it, even if it's worth 10 times that much.
- Your existing policy.
If you assume that your homeowner's policy or renter's policy will protect you in the case of a move, Sorgi would advise taking a closer look. Most of these policies only cover fire and theft. What you really want for the move is specific "damage in transit" coverage, offered by moving insurance.
- A bargain.
Sorgi considers these damage in transit policies to be great bargains. It may up the cost of your move, but what you're really buying is peace of mind. Knowing that your valued belongings will be covered in the event of damage can take some of the stress out of moving day and lead to a smoother transition into your new home. And in the event that you have to make a claim, you'll be glad you prepared for the worst.
