What to Consider When Buying Sheets

Getting into a freshly made bed with crisp clean sheets is one of life's simple pleasures. But one big mistake many shoppers make when buying sheets is relying solely on thread count. In our touch tests, thread count only told half the story.

Here's what to consider when shopping:

1. Don't put too much stock in the label. Only buy sheets you can actually feel. Ask a sales clerk to open the package so you can touch the goods inside.

2. Thread count is the number of threads per square inch. Most sheets are between 180 and 300 thread count. A higher thread count MAY mean a softer sheet, but this isn't always the case. The type of cotton used and the weave also comes into play.

3. Egyptian cotton is considered one of the best. It has longer threads that create a smoother, softer weave. But make sure that it's a long staple yarn that has been combed, woven in Italy, and has a high thread count. A cotton-polyester blend isn't as soft as pure cotton but it's easier to care for and doesn't wrinkle as much.

4. Sateen is very luxurious. It is 100 percent cotton that's woven to have a slight sheen. (Don't confuse this with satin, which is a shiny polyester fabric.) Sateen bedding is delicate so be sure to care for it properly.

5. Linen and silk are great if you live in a hot climate. These sheets will last for decades but do require special care. Linen sheets will also need to be ironed, unless you like the shabby chic look.

Sheets and bedding at department stores always go on sale so don't pay full price!
