Problem:

A lot of stay-at-home parents believe being available 24/7 is the only way to earn respect and remain in control, but the message it broadcasts is the opposite: "Hey, I’m so unorganized that I’m never caught up and have no boundaries."

Solutions:

  • Do not answer your phone every time it rings; instead, maximize technology, set boundaries and change your voice mail message to something like this:

"You’ve reached the voice mail for Sarah. Please leave a message. Calls are usually returned weekdays between 2:30 and 4:30 while the kids are doing homework/at band practice/I’m in the carpool line, etc."

Then, stick to it! You will be pleasantly surprised when the number of calls you receive is greatly reduced.

  • Add a "tag line" to your email signature, especially if you are a stay-at-home parent! Include the number where you want messages left and the best time of the day when you are most likely to be available to answer the phone. Here is an example:

    Sarah Miller
    Mobile: 555-1212
Best times of the day to phone me are between 9-10am and 8-9pm
No calls after 9 pm please
