If you're in the market for a used vehicle, it pays to be savvy. Here are a few steps to take to avoid buying a lemon.
Start with the interior. Look for tears and burn marks.
Check the rubber on the pedals, one thing most car sellers, including restoration experts, forget to check. Heavy wear usually means the owner drives fast and brakes often.
Check the electrical system. Turn the lights on for at least a minute. Then turn on the engine and the lights should get noticeably brighter, indicating that the engine is charging the battery properly.
A quick test to determine if there are any major engine problems is to turn on the car and see if the oil or other warning lights come on and stay on. They should turn off immediately.
