Getting a massage can mean anything from a gentle, calming rubdown to an intensive session that seems more like physical therapy than relaxation. With all the styles and intensities of massage out there, how can you choose what's right for you?

Steven Stone first encountered the healing potential of massage following a surfing injury. After spending several years pursuing an acting career, Stone decided to switch gears and become a certified massage therapist. He has studied at the California Healing Arts College and currently works at a day spa called Spoiled. He offers this basic introduction to the three most popular styles of massage:

  • Swedish. Stone recommends Swedish massage, also called circulatory massage, as a good choice for beginners. This type of massage moves around the blood and lymphatic fluid and can be very relaxing. It's also a good way to get used to being touched by a therapist and discover how much pressure you like.

  • Deep tissue. A deep tissue or sports massage offers everything that a Swedish massage does, but also works deeper on breaking up the fasha, which is what therapists call the elastin, collagen and scar tissue that can, according to theory, limit your range of motion.

  • Shiatsu. Shiatsu massage, sometimes called acupressure, evolved from Chinese medicine. It offers the benefits of Swedish and deep tissue massages, and is believed to aid in balancing the body's energy.

According to Stone, different types of massage work better for different people, so you might want to try different styles and therapist to find out what's best for you.
