The home of glamour and glitz for nearly a century, Times Square still dazzles.

Times Square Theater

Despite the dazzle of high-budget films and the convenience of videos and DVDs, millions of people around the world continue to flock to the theater for live dramas, comedies and musicals. Perhaps the greatest destination for theater fans is the Times Square section of New York's Broadway, known to many as "The Great White Way." What can a traveler expect when visiting this unique capital of entertainment?

After working in the advertising and marketing field for 16 years, Jed Bernstein joined the League of American Theaters and Producers in 1995, eventually rising to the position of President. While with the organization, Bernstein helped create such initiatives as Kids' Night on Broadway, the Broadway Line and the National Broadway Theater Awards. Here he gives us a peek into the exciting world of Times Square theater:

  • Three dozen theaters. When New Yorkers talk about Times Square, they usually mean more than just the square itself, which is about four blocks long and a block wide. The extended Times Square area encompasses the entire Broadway theater district, reaching from 41st street on the south to 54th street on the north. This area has been the home of theaters for nearly a century, and there are currently more than three dozen to choose from.

  • Dinner and a show. Whether you're the type of person who likes to eat a quick bite before the show starts, or enjoy a leisurely late supper after the cast has taken their bows, Times Square can accommodate you. The area is filled with great restaurants, and the staff members are usually very helpful to diners who need to plan their meals around a show.

  • Convenient and safe. New York has excellent public transportation, and it's easy to get to Times Square by taxi, bus or subway. Of if you feel like walking from a nearby hotel or just taking a stroll and soaking up the sights and sounds of Broadway, you can do that too. According to Bernstein, Times Square is now a very safe area to walk in — and a great place to spend a day or evening. So pick a show, choose a restaurant and have fun on the Great White Way!
