Valentine's Day Ideas For SinglesValentine's Day is a wonderful time for couples in love, but for single folks it can be the most dreaded day of the year. Even men and women who are absolutely happy being single often have trouble on February 14th, when the whole world seems to be finding fault with them simply for not being in a romantic relationship. Well, this year can be different. By simply rethinking the holiday and finding some unique and creative ways to celebrate, single people everywhere can stake a claim to Valentine's Day and make it about a lot more than just kissing couples and doting duos.
A proud native of Manhattan, Tessa Benson has attended such prestigious institutions as The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, The American University of Paris and Columbia University. In 2000 she started writing for DailyCandy.com, quickly working her way up to her present position as Senior Staff Writer. A lover of fashion and trend spotting, Benson has written for an eclectic collection of magazines including Manhattan File, The New York Times Style Section, Fashion Wire Daily, and Los Angeles Magazine. Here she offers some great ideas for singles looking for fun ways to celebrate Valentine's Day:
- Treat yourself.
Go out on your own, or grab a close friend and treat yourself to something luxurious or decadent. Get a facial and a massage, visit a spa, or do something new and exciting with your hair. Sending flowers to yourself can also be good fun.
- A singles' party.
Send out valentines to all of your single friends, inviting them to a great dinner party. Stay with them all night, and maybe even turn the gathering into a slumber party. The idea is to do something out of the ordinary so you feel a special bond with your friends.
- A mixer.
Alternately, you can throw a party with the goal of getting some of your single friends to find mates. Invite everybody over for a singles mixer, and perhaps a few will find a special valentine to leave the party with.
- Volunteer.
When you're single, Valentine's Day is a great opportunity to go out and volunteer. Get your mind off the holiday by signing up to help needy children, work with the elderly, or rescue cats and dogs.
- Escape the clichés.
The whole idea is to avoid what the world expects single people to do on Valentine's Day, which is sit home and drown our sorrows in snack foods and sappy movies. So this year, ring up some of your friends and find a way to feel great about being unattached and free at Valentine's Day!
