Beyond Flowers for Valentine's DayIs Valentine's Day one of those holidays when you just do what's expected of you? Has it gotten to the point where you make restaurant reservations, pick up a dozen roses, and sign a nice card just because it's what you've always done? If February 14th is feeling a little routine, then it's time you thought of some alternative ways of showing your sweetheart what being in love really means.
A proud native of Manhattan, Tessa Benson has attended such prestigious institutions as The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, The American University of Paris, and Columbia University. In 2000 she started writing for DailyCandy.com, quickly working her way up to her present position as Senior Staff Writer. A lover of fashion and trend spotting, Benson has written for an eclectic collection of magazines including Manhattan File, The New York Times Style Section, Fashion Wire Daily, and Los Angeles Magazine. Here she offers some ideas for fun alternative gifts and activities to shake you and your sweetie out of the Valentine's Day doldrums:
- Coupons.
An inexpensive but exciting gift idea is to make your own coupons, redeemable for such things as a walk on the beach, a night at the movies, a home cooked dinner, or anything else you think your loved one might like.
- Animals.
If you're stuck for gift ideas that show your love, why not head down to the animal shelter and rescue a dog or cat who needs a good home? Saving an animal's life is a wonderful way to show that you care, and it lets you give the gift of love, even if it may only be "puppy love."
- Bikes.
His and her bikes make great valentine's gifts. The two of you can go on romantic bike rides all year long, and stay fit in the process.
- Songs.
Try burning a CD mix of the most meaningful songs from your relationship. Throw on the song you first danced to, the song that was playing when you took that great road trip together, or anything that will spark good memories of your time as a couple.
- Sports.
Everybody loves spending the night out around Valentine's Day, but the romantic restaurant has become a bit of a cliché. Why not get your sweetheart tickets to his or her favorite sporting event or sports team, and enjoy a slightly more energetic night on the town?
- Be creative.
The idea is to scrap the traditional, expected Valentine's gifts and activities, and think of something new and exciting. Come up with something truly original, and you're sure to have a great time with your significant other this Valentine's Day.
