Throwing a Bunco Party

Are you tired of throwing parties where your guests just stand around by the snack table, trying to make polite conversation? One solution is to throw a Bunco party. Bunco is a fun and fast-paced dice game where players constantly change partners and advance or fall back according to the whims of fate. It's also an ideal excuse to gather friends together in a warm social atmosphere, and games can lead to regular gatherings and closer friendships.

Self-described Bunco queen Ellen Torres lives in South Pasadena, California, with husband Ed and their four children. A full time mom who is devoted to taking part in her children's lives, Torres is coach of her daughter's soccer team and a leading fundraiser for all the public schools in her community. Here she offers advice for putting together a fun Bunco party:

  • Pick a dozen friends.
Bunco games are typically played with 12 people. Torres advises choosing players carefully for compatibility, as there's always a chance the parties could become regular events.
  • Stock up on supplies.
Essential supplies include nine dice, scoring pads and pencils, a bell to signal the start and end of play, and table coverings to protect your table from the dice. Of course, good food and drink is always appreciated.
  • Send out invites.
Pick a night when all your good friends can show, and send out invites to your first Bunco party. Torres prefers mailed invitations over impersonal emails.
  • Try making it monthly.
If your friends enjoy the game and have fun at the party, consider turning the group into a regularly meeting Bunco club, with a different person hosting each time you play. Torres feels that playing once a month is a good choice, as people's busy schedules make it hard to get together more often than that.
