Creating a Ski Vacation

For lucky ski fanatics who happen to live next to the slopes, hitting the powder for a couple of great runs is as simple as walking out the door and over to the lift. For the rest of us, getting to the mountain takes a bit more effort and is often something we get to do but once a season. To make sure your next ski vacation is as fun and fulfilling as you hope it will be, work the phones, surf the net, and plan everything out well in advance.

Amy Olson grew up in Westport, Connecticut, often spending winter weekends skiing Vermont’s Stratton Mountain. After college she moved to Idaho, where she now works as the Communications Coordinator for the Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber and Visitors Bureau. Here Olson lists some important considerations for selecting the perfect resort for your next ski vacation:

  • Aim for a Week's Stay
Give some thought to how much time you can spend on the vacation. In Olson's experience, most ski vacationers stay at a resort for about a week, giving them enough time to do plenty of skiing plus other great activities in the area.

  • Do More Than Just Ski
If you're looking for a change of pace from downhill skiing, consider snowboarding, snowshoeing or even an old-fashioned sleigh ride.

  • Visit a Spa
Many skiers get fairly sore about mid-week, so consider booking a massage or other relaxing treatment at a local spa.

  • Make Restaurant Reservations
Restaurants can get very crowded during ski season, making it difficult to just pop in and sit down at a popular spot. Making reservations eliminates the wait and hassle. After dinner, check out the town's nightlife scene.

  • Spring for Proper Lodging
Many vacationers plan to spend most of their time on the slopes and might be temped to skimp on accommodations. But where you stay will have a great impact on how much you enjoy your trip. Spring for a little luxury and book a room, house or condo with a hot tub or sauna to relieve those ski-weary muscles.

  • Use the Web Before and During Your Stay
The best way to uncover all possible options is to do plenty of research on the Web. Not only will you find information on rooms and activities before the trip, but the Internet can also provide the latest weather reports during the trip so you can be the first in the lift line after a snowfall.
