Check with your retailer to see if and when you should flip your mattress

Caring for Your MattressIf you're like most people, you probably don't give your mattress much thought, even though you likely spent a good deal of money to buy it, and you may spend up to a third of your life sleeping on it. In truth, ignoring your mattress can have adverse effects on your comfort, health and bank account, so it's essential to understand the basics of mattress care.
Formerly a Sales Representative for the Simmons Company, the world's largest mattress manufacturer, Pawn Kongkosonkichkan is currently a Bedding Trainer with Rich's-Macy's/Lazarus/Goldsmiths in Atlanta. Here he offers some important mattress care tips:
- Buy box spring with mattress.
It's important to buy a mattress and box spring together because they work as a team. The box spring acts as a shock absorber, and the mattress provides the support within the set.
- Flip mattress if recommended.
The mattress industry is moving towards non-flip mattresses, but many mattresses still need to be flipped occasionally. Flipping will maximize comfort, help get rid of body impressions in the mattress, and make sure your mattress lasts as long as possible.
- Check with retailer about flipping.
The best way to determine if and when your mattress needs to be flipped is go to your retailer and ask them what the manufacturer recommends. The manufacturer's website might also provide this information. If you purchased your mattress and box spring before the year 2000, it will most likely have to be turned and flipped.
- Review the warranty.
Make sure to carefully read the warranty card that comes with your mattress. It will give you basic guidelines for maintaining your mattress.
- Use a mattress pad.
One good way of protecting your mattress from stains is to use a mattress pad, which, if soiled, is far cheaper to replace than a mattress is. Stains or soil may also void your manufacturers warranty, so if you choose not to use a mattress pad, you might opt for an extra protection plan.
