Investing in Style

(Presented by Buick)

We want all of our treasured belongings, from large pieces of furniture to small decorative items, to last a long time and remain in style. After all, choosing a piece that is poorly made or will go out of fashion in a few months is not a wise way of spending money. So how can you define quality, and make the most of your decorating budget, when buying items for your home?

Named "America's Best Interior Designer" by CNN and Time Magazine, Sheila Bridges is the founder of Sheila Bridges Design Inc., a company committed to creating thought-provoking and comfortable high-end residential spaces. Her television show, Sheila Bridges Designer Living, airs on Fine Living. Here she offers ideas to help you make smart, long-term decorating choices:

  • Shop with the future in mind.
When you're looking for furnishings or decorative pieces, try to "furnish forward." This means designing your rooms and your life with the future in mind. Ask yourself if the piece will hold up for years to come, and if it does, will it still be stylish? In other words, think in terms of long-term investment rather than short-term buying.

  • Stay true to your tastes.
Examine your own tastes, in terms of what you're likely to enjoy and appreciate over the long haul. When looking at a piece, ask yourself if you'll still like it in fifteen years.

  • Avoid the trends.
It's wise to avoid trends. Think about proportions and shape? does the piece represent timeless design or just the design-of-the-moment? Will it look good placed next things from any era, or is it specific to a single, short-lived design movement?

  • Kick the tires.
Make sure the piece is well crafted. You don't need to be an expert, just look closely at the construction and don't be afraid to ask questions of the seller.

  • Invest in your happiness.
Remember, the wisest investments are those you make in your own happiness, so look for top quality construction and buy what you really love.
