Research and get some new ideas to transform your yard.

Alfresco Living

New materials and wireless technology are making outdoor living more sophisticated and convenient. Take the following steps to extend your inner sanctum and transform your yard into a comfortable, multi-functional space:

Define Your Goals.
First, review your options and define your goals. Extend a pre-existing room, upgrade your home site, or just draw attention to a specific area. Narrowing your focus will make choosing the right materials and the whole design process easier.

Think About Function.
Do you want a simple sheltered seating area, a home office, or tranquil meditation spot? Once you have determined the type of space it will be, consider the function of the space. The space can be basic or it can be wired for light, sound and outfitted for gourmet cooking. Now, it is possible to move just about every interior function outside.

Consider Mood.
When dreaming up your outdoor space, ask yourself what feelings or moods you hope to evoke. Adjust lighting to create a formal or an informal mood. Install fans and add simple overall touches. This way you can either energize the space and make it sociable, or create a peaceful place to go and escape.

Integrate Style.
Another consideration is how your new space will be integrated with the existing space. You'll want your outdoor and interior areas to reflect a similar style and personality.
