Solution #1: Teen Room That Suits Mom, Too
Simplify Your Life : Episode FLSYL-301

Design expert Leslie Neblett works to create a new bedroom for a teenager.

If you're struggling over a room for your teen that meets his needs for a hangout spot but doesn't drive his parents crazy, try updates that will make the room more current without driving mom crazy.

Some solution:

  • Remove a few pieces of family furniture from the room so there's more room for the teen's personality.
  • Paint the room in the child's choice of colors — an update that's easily undone when the child moves out. Make sure to create a living space within the bedroom by painting one area a darker hue of the same color.
  • Outfit the room with blinds, a desk and file cabinet, and maybe a new futon for lounging and school work. Just make sure to keep a few of the heirlooms mom likes in the room, too, like an heirloom radio.
