  • Never use wire hangers — they don't hold the shape of a garment.
  • Hang most garments on wood. Delicate clothes should be on fabric hangers.
  • Brighten white t-shirts by adding a half- cup of lemon juice to a medium load of whites. This has the effect of bleach without the harsh chemicals.
  • Dry clean infrequently. Spot cleaning extends the life of dry clean only clothing.
  • Dry clean all pieces of an outfit together. The chemicals used in the process can sometimes cause color changes.
  • Remove the belt before hanging up your pants. If left in the loops, a belt can stretch out the fabric and create wrinkles.
  • Hang evening wear in cloth garment bags. Plastic garment bags can cause changes in color.
  • Alternate pairs of leather shoes to give them a day to dry out. This will make them less likely to crack.
  • To keep a white sweater white, wash it normally, rinse it out in cool water, ring out the excess water, fold it, seal it in a plastic zipper bag and place it in the freezer. The cold acts as a natural bleaching agent.
