Simple Tips: Holiday Candles
Simplify Your Life : Episode FLSYL-326

Whatever December holiday you celebrate, candles will likely play a part. To get them ready for the celebration, take a few simple steps.

  • If your candles are dusty, lightly buff them with nylon pantyhose to restore the shine.
  • A whitish coating, called a bloom, often develops on candles in cold temperatures. Use a hair dryer for about 15 seconds to get rid of it.
  • To cure small scratches, buff with vegetable oil.
  • Trim the wick to a quarter of an inch and light the candle for no more than two or three hours at a time to insure it is safe.
  • Remember to keep candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces and keep the wax pool free of debris, such as old matches.
  • Always keep lit candles away from children and pets and far from any flammable surface such as greenery or curtains.
  • Don't bother putting your candles in the freezer to make them burn longer. That's an old wives tale. Freezing actually makes the wick moist and more difficult to light.
