Whatever December holiday you celebrate, candles will likely play a part. To get them ready for the celebration, take a few simple steps.
If your candles are dusty, lightly buff them with nylon pantyhose to restore the shine.
A whitish coating, called a bloom, often develops on candles in cold temperatures. Use a hair dryer for about 15 seconds to get rid of it.
To cure small scratches, buff with vegetable oil.
Trim the wick to a quarter of an inch and light the candle for no more than two or three hours at a time to insure it is safe.
Remember to keep candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces and keep the wax pool free of debris, such as old matches.
Always keep lit candles away from children and pets and far from any flammable surface such as greenery or curtains.
Don't bother putting your candles in the freezer to make them burn longer. That's an old wives tale. Freezing actually makes the wick moist and more difficult to light.
