Beer fermenting tank; Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, N.Y.

While the classic beer styles originated in Europe, America holds a strong brewing history and tradition as well.

  • Beer is made of barley, but other grains can be added for taste or texture:
    • Pilsners: bottom-fermenting lager yeast makes this beer crisp and light
    • Pale Ales: top-fermenting ale yeast makes for an almost fruity flavor
    • Stouts: these dark, full-bodied ales have a distinctive malty flavor
    • Lambics: these ales are sweet and fruity, without the typical beer bitterness
  • Beer styles come from two main variants:
    1. whether or not the grain is toasted.
    2. the amount and type of hops used in the brewing
