Step 1: Define Your Vision
Survival Guide : Episode FLSUR-104

There's so much to choose from — what's a hapless homeowner to do? Architect David Ling suggests first clearing your mind. Try to remove yourself from the preconceived notions of about the kitchen you grew up with and the kitchen you have now, and start from a blank slate. Hit the design magazines to get inspired by colors, textures and ideas. Then create a scrapbook of images that you'd like to see in your kitchen. These are some of the essential lifestyle questions to ask:

  • How often is the family in the kitchen and how much seating will their activities require?
  • Do you entertain often? If so, perhaps you'd like a long counter for buffets.
  • Do you bake or cook a lot, enough to use a double oven or a multiple-burner stove?
  • Does your kitchen need to function as an office, too? Maybe you'll need some file drawers or space for a computer.

Another way to refine your vision: touch base with a lot of pals. Spend time in other people's kitchens, and if you're comfortable asking, try to cook in someone else's newly renovated kitchen to see what might work well in your own.
