Once you select the cabinets, everything else falls into place in terms of space and style. And since cabinetry eats up a good portion of the budget — 30 percent on average — you'll want to choose it carefully. Options to consider include a pantry wall that lets you use small appliances right on the adjustable shelves and corner cabinets with pull-out, telescoping trays. Some have innovative inserts for silverware, spices, etc.

One of the most important questions to ask when you plan cabinets: How tall are the people in your household? Make sure your cabinets are not too high or too low, but just right. If you're five feet tall, the maximum cabinet reach you'll be comfortable with is five feet, five inches. If you're six feet tall, the maximum comfortable reach is six feet, three inches, so don't plan on shelves too much higher than that.
