  • A sleeping bag is "make or break" equipment for a camping trip. There are two types: a rectangular sleeping bag that gives you more room, or a "mummy" bag that's a bit tapered at the bottom. Mummy bags are better for the cold but they don't allow you to move much.
  • You'll need a backpack for hiking or fishing trips. Ask the salesperson to put weights in the backpack you're considering and then walk around the store to see how it feels. Try a couple of different packs and compare.
  • If you want to keep it simple, the one "must-have gizmo" is an all-purpose pocketknife. A luxury model, the Leatherman, is like a Swiss Army Knife on steroids and is available for $89.
  • Not absolute necessities, these are recommended camping "toys":
    • Altimeter — helps forecast the weather and measure how high you've hiked.
    • GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) unit — works from a satellite to remember precisely where you are.
    • Walkie talkies — great for staying in touch with everyone in your party.
    • Headlamp — goes on your head to light the way while your hands are free for cooking or other camp chores.
