Things you should keep in a survival kit:
Water is a necessity. For a four-person family, plan on 3-4 liters per person per day of potable water. But if you find yourself in an emergency situation without water, look for wildlife. Birds will circle watering holes.
A roll of gauze tape and some gauze pads will take care of just about all injuries, bites and scrapes.
A compass will help you navigate.
Waterproof matches and a waterproof match case are essential because if you get lost at night, you'll need a fire. Also, smoke will help someone find you.
A whistle is good to have in case you get lost. Just keep whistling and someone will find you.
Bring a filter or water treatment tablets to treat water from creeks.
