Step 3: Settle on a Flexible Location
Survival Guide : Episode FLSUR-106

  • The size of your guest list and the size of your bankroll will rule out a lot of places. But for an average-priced wedding, expect to pay almost $11,000 for the location.
  • April-October is peak wedding season. If you can get married in another month, you'll save some money on location.
  • Saturday is the peak day for weddings, you can maximize your wedding dollar by picking a different day. You'll save 15-25 percent by getting married on a Thursday instead, for example.
  • Look into spaces like museums, parks or universities. Some of the most beautiful locations are also the most affordable.
  • When you're location shopping, check the square footage, keeping in mind that for a cocktail hour you'll require at least three square feet per guest.
  • Another way to keep your location cost down without sacrificing style: serve expensive appetizers, Treats like filet mignon or lobster tail served bite-size make guests feel very, very special. Then you can have a less-expensive entree like pasta or vegetarian lasagna for the main course.
  • Make sure to ask these questions before you sign for a wedding venue:
    • Are there any special permits needed?
    • Is there a music curfew?
    • Can you light candles inside?
    • Can I provide my own caterer?
    • Can I provide my own alcohol or am I required to buy from you?
  • Ask for a complete list of all potential charges and look out for the unexpected... or the ridiculous! Some locations will charge for every last thing, including china, chair covers and even a cake-cutting fee!
