  • Smile! A genuine smile shows that you're receptive. Those who don't smile are perceived as distracted or indifferent.
  • Use your eyes. This tells someone that you're really listening.
  • It's not always easy to make eye contact. If you're concerned about that, one trick is to focus on the space between the other person's eyebrows.
  • Stand tall. Plant your feet on the floor so that it's clear you're there to listen — and you're not about to make a hasty exit.
  • Open up. When you cross your arms or legs, it puts a barrier between you and the other person and that's not good for clear communication.
