  • Ergonomics is the applied science of equipment design, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort.
  • When you work at a desk, get up for five to 10 minutes every hour to walk and stretch.
  • Sore shoulders, nerve pain in the leg and headaches can all be symptoms of a strained lower back.
  • Dehydration increases muscle fatigue, so drink eight ounces of water each hour during your work day.
  • Chairs can have many levers, but be certain you can at least adjust height and tilt.
  • If your feet still don't rest comfortably on the floor, get a footrest. They range from $20 to $30 at most office stores.
  • Also look for chairs with armrests that swivel in, to provide support for your arms in whatever position makes you comfortable.
  • Inflatable seat wedges start around $15 at Relax the Back stores, drugstores and travel stores.
