Whisky is an important part of Scottish life. Its flavor and composition is celebrated and acknowledged in annual festivals like Edinburgh's Fringe Festival, and at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, whose headquarters is in one of the oldest commercial buildings in Scotland, The Vaults in Leith.
Only 25 miles long and 20 miles wide, the island of Islay (eye-la) was known for hundreds of years as the "Queen of the Hebrides," the island of Islay (eye-la) once supported 23 distilleries—now supporting only seven.
