San Juan Islands, Washington Attract Visitors and Wildlife

For an exceptional Washington coast vacation, spend a weekend on the San Juan Islands in Washington. Located within the San Juan Archipelago, which includes the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, comprises more than 700 islands and reefs and about 450 of the islands in San Juan County are large enough to be named.

San Juan Island Vacation
The San Juan Islands are an outdoor lovers dream. The islands sit beneath the white-capped peak of Mount Baker and San Juan County, and with more than 375 miles of rocky and sandy waterfront, they boast more shoreline than any other county in the nation. Outdoor activities on a San Juan Island vacation are endless, and tourists can go boating, sailing, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, scuba diving or kayaking. There also are just as many San Juan Island vacation rental properties for vacationers to choose from, ranging from quaint bed and breakfasts to historic inns.

Whale Watching Tours
The highlights of a San Juan Islands vacation are the whale watching tours. More than 85 magnificent Orca whales make their home in the Salish Sea, the inland marine waters surrounding the San Juan Islands. Although whales can be seen year round, the most frequent sightings are typically from late April through late September. Several charter companies offer day trips to see the whales up close, and many have trained naturalists onboard to enhance the experience. Many other species of wildlife, including bald eagles, are here throughout the seasons and can be seen from the shore or aboard commercial tour boats.

San Juan Island Wedding
Because of the beautiful location and natural scenery, the Islands have become an ideal location for weddings. What could be more beautiful than a wedding in the San Juan Islands! Brides and grooms can choose from a variety of locations to exchange vows, including on the beach, on a boat or at a grand resort. Plus the island has many vendors, including photographers, wedding planners, jewelers, florists and caterers, to help engaged couples plan the perfect San Juan Island wedding.
