Hi Steve,
I notice you wear an open face arai. I too like the 3/4 helmet. You look like you have a long oval head like mine. How do you find a helmet to fit without getting a headache?
Steve Natt:
David,
The only thing more important than having a quality helmet is getting one to fit. It's like shoes, and why I never buy footwear online: just because you know the numerical size of your foot, it doesn't mean the shoe will feel good when you walk. Here's what I do when trying to pick out a new helmet: First, find a store that carries several brands - each company has their own idea of what an "average" head shape is - then start putting them on your head. You want the snuggest fit you can stand without developing a headache, and the only way to do that is to wear the helmet for a while. It may seem ridiculous, but you won't really know how the helmet is going to fit during a day's ride if you try it on for less than 15 minutes or so. Also, be sure you walk around the store - use this as an opportunity to try sitting on all the different bikes in the shop. The thing you really want to look for is whether you feel pressure on the top front of your head: the spot you'd use to properly "head" a soccer ball. IIf so, you've got a lid that incorrect for your noggin. Also, make sure the cheek pads hold the helmet snugly to your face: you don't want to be able to easily rotate it. Replacement cheek pads of different sizes are available for Arai helmets - so if you've got a skinny face this is the way to go. Unfortunately, most of the guys who work in bike shops are far from helmet fit experts - you're gonna have to take the time to get it right.
Thanks for watching, and keep the rubber side down!
Steve
