5 Things You Need to Know About Road Trips With Kids

  1. Keep a cooler within easy reach.
Pack a variety of snacks and drinks, including easy sandwich ingredients, plenty of fresh fruit and other healthy treats to satisfy everyone's appetite.

  2. Plan a variety of car-friendly activities.
Keep everyone entertained by giving each child a daypack containing toys, books, and games. Provide older children with their own maps so they can chart your progress and help with directions.

  3. Let each child pack a favorite DVD.
Bring along kids' music, audio books, and DVDs. Some auto entertainment systems even have separate zones for rear and front passengers, allowing children to enjoy a movie, while you listen to your favorite music mix.

  4. Install roller-shades for naps.
Pack plenty of blankets and pillows so the kids can be as comfortable as possible. Consider installing roller shades on the rear windows to make it easier for them to nap.

  5. Pack a ball for exercise at rest stops.
Be realistic about your travel schedule. Take breaks every couple of hours to let everyone burn off a little energy, and consider stopping for the night after 6 to 8 hours of drive time.
