Bedding down among the RVs and themed amusements of this 750-acre retreat is far from a true wilderness experience, but the summer-camp atmosphere and varied recreational opportunities at Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground make it a fun alternative to staying in an Orlando-area hotel.
The resort offers a choice of campsites and comfortable air-conditioned cabins that sleep up to six guests, along with two swimming pools, a lake with a sandy beach and water craft rentals, horse and pony rides, and nightly campfire sing-alongs followed by free outdoor screenings of classic Disney movies. Free shuttle buses link the property to the various Disney parks and attractions, and campground guests receive the benefits of staying at a Disney resort, including priority restaurant reservations and admission to extra morning or evening hours at the theme parks.
Basic campsites vary seasonally from $39 to $75 a night, slightly more if you want cable TV and sewer hookups for your RV. All campsites have electricity and running water, with access to shared bathrooms and showers nearby. At $239 to $349 a night, cabin accommodations are significantly more expensive, but each has its own private bathroom and kitchen, with telephones, TVs, daily housekeeping service and other hotel-like amenities. The cabins can be particularly appealing during the summer months, when tent campers have no respite from nighttime heat and humidity.
