Pros and Cons of Disney Hotels

Along with its four major theme parks and myriad other attractions, Disney World offers a wide range of hotel options in various price ranges. While it may be possible to find better value for your lodging dollars at properties outside of the Disney empire, there are some key advantages to choosing an on-site hotel, particularly if you plan to spend most of your time at the Magic Kingdom, Epcot and other Disney attractions.

First, guests at the Disney resorts get free access to the entire Walt Disney World transportation system, making it possible to get around without the added expense and hassle of renting a car — though you will need your own wheels for excursions to Universal Resort Orlando, SeaWorld and other nearby destinations. Resort guests also may get privileged access to the theme parks during the hour before normal opening or after normal closing, and any merchandise you purchase in Walt Disney World can be delivered directly to your room free of charge. Another big advantage is that you can more easily duck back to your room for an afternoon nap or a swim before heading out for evening entertainment.

On the other hand, many travelers prefer not to be immersed in Disney World 24 hours a day, and Orlando offers some terrific lodging outside of Mickey’s domain. Demand is high at the Disney resorts, so rooms tend to get booked up well in advance, and prices are generally high compared with similar accommodations off-site. Affordable options are available at Disney World, however, most notably at the Pop Century, All-Star Sports, All-Star Music and All-Star Movies resorts, which offer clean, basic lodging dressed up with typical Disney panache — or you can just pitch a tent at the Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, one of Orlando’s best bargains.

The Disney World website (www.disneyworld) provides detailed information about all of the Disney resorts, including rates, packages and an online reservations system.
