Simple Comforts: North Lodge on Oakland

Built in 1904, this stone house halfway between the Biltmore Estate and downtown Asheville now serves as a bed and breakfast. You can choose from six completely renovated, beautifully furnished rooms, all with private baths.

Breakfast each day consists of coffee, juice, fresh fruit, breakfast breads, and a hot dish. Special dietary needs can be met with advance notice, and vegetarians are welcome. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages are available around the clock.

One sweet perk is that you can schedule an in-room massage from a professional therapist. Some advance notice is helpful. Fees: 30 minutes, $45; 60 minutes, $85; 90 minutes, $110.

Basic rates for the North Lodge range from $115 to $150 per night, depending on the room you choose, and rise slightly at peak travel times and on weekends.
