Nirvana on Two Wheels: Getting Around Asheville

Although Asheville's downtown area is very cozy and pedestrian-friendly, if you really want to see all the sights and explore the outlying areas, you should plan to have a car while you're in town. For current road conditions and travel information, simply dial 511 from anywhere in the state of North Carolina.

If you're a cyclist, you're in luck, because this is a spoke-happy town with a conservation sensibility. In Asheville, many workers commute by bike, and opportunities for trail, mountain, and road riding abound.

That said, many local cyclists clamor for more bike lanes downtown. Fortunately, traffic moves fairly slowly and rush hour is light, so it isn't difficult to keep up on a bike. Beyond the downtown area, however, car traffic in Asheville can be fast-moving and hectic, so if you choose to get around by bike, know the rules of the road and be prepared to share some byways with motor vehicles.
