Claim to Fame: Super exhibitions, manageable size
With all the great New York City museums nearby, you may not think to visit their smaller cousin in Beantown. But Boston's Museum of Fine Arts is a marvelously accessible alternative to the Big Apple with highly regarded collections of Egyptian artifacts, Japanese pottery and French Impressionist paintings.
The MFA commissioned a building redesign in 1999 and construction is now underway, so you may find the MFA noisy. You can take a virtual tour of the new digs at www.mfa.org. The museum is always free for students with ID and free to the public on Wednesdays from 4 to 9:45 p.m.
