Claim to Fame: A venerable architect's brand-new tribute to his ancestral homeland
The Suzhou Museum building doesn't just house treasures; it's likely to become a treasure in its own right. I.M. Pei's recently opened homage to China may well be his last building because the world famous architect is nearing 90. Pei's design combines traditions from the 2,500-year-old city of Suzhou and his trademark geometric shapes.
The museum collection has been around since 1960 and includes paintings, calligraphy and artifacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The accompanying gardens are also a popular attraction because they are planted in a manner for which Suzhou is famous.
