Claim to Fame: Stunning natural scenery as a backdrop for modern art
This museum takes its name from the country house in which it's located. Seems the home's previous owner inexplicably had three wives named Louise and named his home in honor of one or all of them. Danish entrepreneur Knud Jensen purchased the house in 1958 with the immediate thought that its lush setting on the Oresund (the strait separating Sweden and Denmark) would be a perfect showcase for modern art. The collection includes masterpieces by Jean Arp, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Joan Miró and other giants of the modern period. Some of the pieces are set outside in nature, like Henry Moore's bronze sculpture "Reclining Figure No. 5," which overlooks the Oresund.
Louisiana Museum also prides itself on its classical music series and artist-in-residence program. Its 265-seat music auditorium was designed to maximize the chamber music experience. Check the website for dates and times.
