The Museum of Modern Art Drawing art lovers the world over
Originally founded in 1929 as an educational institution, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has committed itself to establishing, preserving and documenting a permanent collection of the highest order, one that goes beyond masterworks. The MoMA aims to create a dialogue between the established and the experimental, the past and the present, all within an environment supportive of the issues of modern and contemporary art.
From an initial gift of eight prints and one drawing, The MoMA's collection now includes 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. The collection is supplemented by 22,000 films, videos, media works, film stills, scripts, posters and historical documents. The library is home to 300,000 books, artist books and periodicals.
The opening of the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building in November 2006 signified the completion of the MoMA's expansion. Now at 630,000 square feet, the museum has almost twice the space it did before. Spacious galleries of contemporary art are juxtaposed by smaller, more intimate galleries for other collections. Temporary exhibits are located on the expansive, sky-lit top floor. Outside, the gardens southern terrace now houses the Modern, a new fine dining restaurant. This expansion project was the MoMAs most extensive since opening its doors in 1929. The combination of new spaces with the original architecture only serves to dramatically enhance the amazing collection of modern and contemporary art housed within. These are but a few reasons why the MoMA is today recognized as one of the foremost modern art museums in the world.
