One of the most elegant hotels on Martha’s Vineyard, the Charlotte Inn in Edgartown, offers the ultimate in old-world sophistication, with rooms showcasing antique treasures, leather-bound books, hunting prints, and sterling-silver dresser sets. Each of the five 19th-century white-clapboard houses that comprise the inn is joined by English-style gardens; the atmosphere is that of a refined Cotswold estate, all just a block and a half from Edgartown’s harbor. Be sure to dine at the jackets-requested hotel restaurant, which makes excellent use of the harbor’s seafood — don’t miss the seasonal preparations of the local Katama Bay scallops and oysters. Family-specific note: under "activities" the hotel lists "children from the age of 14"— consider that one way of saying that 13-and-unders won’t be welcome.
