Getting There
Lose the car and ride the ferry

The Island Queen ferry runs daily from Falmouth, Mass., to Martha's Vineyard.

Traveling to and around Martha’s Vineyard may be the most challenging element of vacationing there. For the latter, do what you can to leave the car at home. Many hotels are within walking distance of the various ferries, and the island is generally best explored by bike. (There’s also a public-transport system to many attractions, and rental car offices scattered across the island for reaching more far-flung destinations.) If you are able to travel without a car, the Island Queen is a popular passenger-only ferry, making the crossing from Falmouth Harbor to Oak Bluffs in 35 minutes. For faster service direct from Providence or Boston, several carriers, including Cape Air, fly to Martha’s Vineyard’s airport.
