Doing the Dog
Despite gripe about the hype; the Black Dog is worth a visit

The Black Dog Tavern opened in Vineyard Haven in 1969. Since the 1990s, you haven't been able to swing a lobster roll on the island without hitting a tourist in a Black Dog t-shirt.

The Black Dog is an iconic (or at least, superbly marketed) Martha’s Vineyard attraction, visible on t-shirts, mugs, tote bags, and other souvenirs of the island. The Black Dog café may be the best bet for partaking in the Vineyard experience, especially if you’re traveling with companions resistant to participating in such an on-the-beaten-path adventure.

The Vineyard Haven café is an excellent place for stocking up on picnic essentials like fresh baked goods, take-out sandwiches and homemade peanut butter cups. Of course, the Black Dog Tavern is better than its grumpy, brand-disparaging critics might think. Any resistant hearts should melt at the sight of their mouth-watering breakfast menu, featuring pancakes (with strawberry, blueberry, and white chocolate-chip pancakes) and the Red Hot Mama, scrambled eggs with andouille sausage and jalapenos.
