Rome in Pictures
There are more masterpieces per square foot in Rome than any other city in the world. Here's a photo tour of some sites no visitor should miss.
The ruins of ancient Rome's greatest amphitheater, the Colosseum, still stand nearly 2,000 years after the sports arena was built. The place could seat 55,000 people and was the scene for gory gladiator matches and wild animal fights. It has also been the scene of many Hollywood toga epics; Russell Crowe fought in a computer-created version of the Colosseum in Gladiator. Legend has it that Rome will stand as long as the Colosseum does; the awesome building has become a symbol of the city.
