Providence Day Trip: Newport A treasure-trove of Gilded Age mansions and an unforgettable outdoor excursion await an hour from Providence.
By Diane Vadino
Looking to explore the area outside of Providence for a bit? The gorgeous seaside city of Newport and its famous mansions and spectacular shoreline make for a fabulous day trip. Only an hour's drive from Providence, Newport is perhaps most famous for its Gilded Age-era mansions. Many of the residences, including the famous Breakers, once Cornelius Vanderbilt's summer home, are open to visitors.
The stunning Marble House, also a Vanderbilt property, and Chateau-sur-Mer, which looks like it was plucked from the French countryside, are other top picks. If the opulent settings overpower, set off on the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, a National Recreation Trail that runs between spectacular homes and the coastline.
