8 Must-See National Monuments

Devils Tower, Wyo.
Go Climb a Mountain!

Folks of a certain age will recognize this monolithic rock formation from the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Devils Tower in northeast Wyoming juts to a height of 1,300 feet and is ringed by hundreds of striking vertical columns. The cracks between these columns attract thousands of adventurous rock climbers each year. Novices can take a beginner's climbing class or stay earth-bound and hike the mile-long circumference. Devils Tower is the nation's first established national monument.
