8 Must-See National Monuments
Statue of Liberty, N.Y. Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor The Statue of Liberty is one of the most instantly recognizable figures in the world, and this New York City landmark has come to symbolize freedom, democracy and international friendship. The 300-foot-tall statue and granite pedestal is situated on Liberty Island, within the star-shaped walls of Fort Wood. This famous gift from France consists of 300 hand-hammered copper sheets positioned around a frame designed by Gustave Eiffel. The statue's familiar green patina is the result of weather and oxidation, not paint. Note: For access to the Statue of Liberty Museum inside the statue's base, as well as the observation deck at the top of the pedestal, visitors must secure a special Monument Access Pass. It is best to do so well in advance as they are limited.
